About Dr. Vincenzo Giordano

Dr. Vincenzo Giordano began his career in cardiothoracic surgery in 2011 when he joined the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. His involvement in complex adult cardiothoracic surgeries helped him develop significant skills in managing critically ill patients, which was further cemented by his acquisition of an FCCS certification.

In 2012, he became a Specialty Doctor at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. During his three-year tenure, he sharpened his expertise in elective and emergency surgical procedures, actively participated in mortality and morbidity briefings, and engaged in multidisciplinary cardiothoracic meetings. This period was also crucial for enhancing his mentoring and training skills while deepening his research interests in cardiac and aortic surgeries.

Position as Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon

In October 2015, Dr. Giordano was appointed Locum Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal Infirmary, where he began performing a wide range of cardiac procedures independently. His expertise includes minimally invasive surgeries and a broad spectrum of complex cardiac procedures. By 2017, he secured a substantive consultant position, under which he has since performed over 1900 cardiac and aortic surgeries, maintaining an average of more than 200 cases annually. His surgical expertise includes total arterial myocardial revascularization, off-pump surgical revascularization, and various complex aortic surgeries.

He is an integral member of the Scottish National Thoraco-Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Complex Aortic Service, aiming to provide comprehensive care for patients with severe aortic conditions across Scotland.

In 2020, Dr. Vincenzo pioneered the port-access approach through a mini right anterior thoracotomy for aortic valve replacement, introducing this innovative technique to Scotland. He also plays a vital role in the national TAVI program and leads the Quality Improvement Program within his department, focusing on enhancing surgical protocols and patient care standards.
