About Dr. Vincenzo Giordano

Dr. Vincenzo Giordano’s professional journey in cardiothoracic surgery began in 2011 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary within the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. His role there involved performing complex adult cardiothoracic surgeries. This position allowed him to significantly refine his critical care skills, culminating in a certification for FCCS.

In 2012, he furthered his career at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he served as a Specialty Doctor. Over the next three years, he was deeply involved in elective and emergency surgical procedures, honing his decision-making skills in critical situations. He regularly participated in mortality and morbidity reviews and attended multidisciplinary cardiothoracic meetings. This period also marked significant growth in his mentoring and training capabilities, advancing his cardiac and aortic surgery research interests.

By October 2015, Dr. Giordano had advanced to the Locum Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery position at the Royal Infirmary. This role allowed him to perform a broad spectrum of cardiac procedures independently, including minimally invasive surgeries. In 2017, he was granted a substantive consultant post since he has performed over 1900 cardiac and aortic surgeries, averaging over 200 cases annually. His expertise spans many procedures, including total arterial myocardial revascularization, off-pump surgical revascularization, and various intricate aortic surgeries.

He is a key member of Scotland’s Scottish National Thoraco-Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Complex Aortic Service, which provides comprehensive care for patients with complex aortic conditions.

In 2020, he pioneered the port-access approach via a mini right anterior thoracotomy for aortic valve replacement, a technique that marked a first for Scotland. His significant role in the national TAVI program and as the leader of the Quality Improvement Program within his department underscores his commitment to advancing cardiovascular care and patient outcomes.

Following an eight-month fellowship in Aortic Surgery at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital in 2018, Dr. Giordano introduced the Frozen Elephant Trunk technique for treating thoracic aortic disease in Scotland. He has implanted more than 70 of these devices, reinforcing the Royal Infirmary’s status as a leading center for complex aortic surgery in the UK.

His clinical research efforts are focused on improving outcomes in aortic surgery and developing innovative surgical techniques. He regularly contributes as a reviewer for prestigious medical journals and is dedicated to educating the next generation of surgeons through organized workshops and seminars. His upcoming proctorship with Terumo Aortic begins in April 2025 and is eagerly anticipated.
